Valentina Marta-Rodríguez holds a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Vigo (2015), awarded with honors, for her dissertation on biomedical text genres.
She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation and Linguistics at the University of Vigo, where she has taught in the Translation and Interpreting degree program since 2011.
Her research focuses on biomedical translation, medical text genres, and gender studies through the history of translation, particularly in the analysis of diseases traditionally associated with women.
For nearly twenty years, she worked as a freelance translator for major pharmaceutical companies, in both exclusively medical-pharmaceutical and medico-legal contexts. She specializes in the field of rare diseases, aiming to raise awareness of patients who suffer from them and, in doing so, improve their quality of life through translated medical literature. She also worked as a consultant in the translation and drafting of medical documents (in Galician and Spanish) to produce texts that adhere to idiomatic expression and are accessible to laypeople. Through her work, she aims to promote the use of Galician and Spanish as languages of science and contribute to their development.
She has won several poetry awards and has published a collection of poems (Takotsubo: morfopatoloxía dun corazón roto) with Medulia Publishers. Her career achievements led her to receive the Alumni-UVigo community’s award for excellence in the humanities in July 2024.
