This series of scientific publications was created to disseminate research related to linguistics and languages, specifically those connected to the thematic lines of the Instituto Lingua. It is offered as an opportunity to explore new paths and also to revisit and retrace old ones—the classic, the traditional, the enduring.
That the first volume is Glotosemiotics has the feel of a fortunate encounter at a crossroads that is always intriguing and revealing: the nature of symbols, the explanation of how the material with which we construct language works. This book can only be the result of the boldness, talent, and analytical depth of Juan Carlos Moreno Cabrera, who brings together two traditions not previously regarded as kindred or convergent: the semiology of Ferdinand de Saussure and the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce.
The task of revisiting and bringing closer together Peirce’s writings alone already makes this work valuable, but he goes further, with an ambition that also seeks to integrate sign languages and written language into a bold and comprehensive explanation that encompasses different aspects of linguistics within the broad perspective of semiotics.
In this work, numerous writings, traditions, and examples intersect, demonstrating the author’s vast erudition. It will undoubtedly stand as an initial milestone that will inspire others in the future—works that we will be pleased to welcome into the Lingua series.
