Tamara Varela Vila holds a degree in Translation and Interpreting from the Universidade de Vigo (2007) and a Master’s in Multilingual Lexicology and Terminology–Translation from Université Lumière Lyon 2 (2008). She earned her PhD (2015) from the Universidade de Vigo with a dissertation focused on the use of ontologies for multilingual terminology management.
She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation and Linguistics at the Universidade de Vigo, where she has been teaching in the Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting since 2011. Her career combines university teaching with extensive professional experience as a translator specializing in the biomedical field.
Her research focuses on biomedical translation and multilingual terminology management in the health domain, with particular attention to rare diseases. She also took part in the creation of the multilingual portal of resources on rare diseases, RERCOR, and the terminological knowledge base ONTERMET, both designed to support specialized translation and research. Since 2015, she has been a member of the editorial board of Panace@, a journal devoted to biomedical translation. She is currently a member of the Galician Observatory for Media Accessibility (GALMA).
