Mar Nieves Fernandez

Mar Nieves-Fernández holds a BA in Foreign Languages (2020) and an MA in Advanced English Studies with a specialization in English Linguistics (2021), both from the Universidade de Vigo. In her BA thesis, titled “A Look into Thomas Sheridan’s and John Walker’s Attitudes towards Mispronunciation in Eighteenth-Century Dictionaries”, she examined 18th-century pronouncing dictionaries to analyze how regional and social variation was treated by Thomas Sheridan and John Walker, two of the most prominent orthoepists of the time. Her MA dissertation, “An Orthoepical Analysis of the Velar Nasal in Thomas Spence’s The Grand Repository of English Language”, was conceived as a continuation of her previous work, this time with a phonological focus. For her PhD dissertation, she is doing research on the historical and phonological development of the velar nasal in the second half of the 18th century under the supervision of Prof. Nuria Yáñez Bouza and Prof. Esperanza Rama Martínez, both from the University of Vigo.
