José Yuste Frías

A graduate and PhD in Philosophy and Letters (Romance Philology [French]) from the University of Zaragoza, José Yuste Frías is an Associate Professor at the Department of Translation and Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology and Translation at the University of Vigo.

He is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Research Group Traducción & Paratraducción (T&P) at the University of Vigo, which he directs, manages, and coordinates. He leads the Máster en Traducción para la Comunicación Internacional [MTCI] (EXCELLENT MASTER’S DEGREE OF THE XUNTA DE GALICIA and EUROPEAN MASTER’S IN TRANSLATION), the university-specific degree Especialista en Traducción para la Industria del Videojuego [ETIV], and the International Doctoral Program in Traducción & Paratraducción [T&P] at UVigo, in which José Yuste Frías has supervised seven doctoral theses to date.

Each and every one of his professional, teaching, and research activities can be found in the various sections of the Yuste-it website—the professional, teaching, and research site of José Yuste Frías, active since 2005. The site offers open access to more than 125 of his scholarly publications, including books, book chapters, articles in prestigious translation journals, and posts in both his Spanish research blog (Blog de Yuste. On y sème à tout vent) and his French research blog (Sur les seuils du traduire. Un carnet de recherche sur la traduction et la paratraduction). As part of a true knowledge transfer policy, José Yuste Frías is also the creator and director of three Web-TV programs dedicated to the scientific dissemination of translation: Zig-Zag, EXIT, and Píldoras T&P.

A specialist in the symbol and the image in translation, his fields of research in professional translation include advertising translation and transcreation, as well as the (direct and reverse) translation of video games, comics, children’s books, art books, and tourism texts. Years of experience in the study of comparative orthotypography for translation have nurtured his particular interest in post-editing when it comes to reviewing and correcting translated texts in the professional market.

A translation theorist, his research on the paramount importance of paratextuality in the digital age of translation has led him to publish pioneering theoretical, didactic, and professional reflections on both the paratextual aspects in the final editing of translations and on the ethical liminal space always occupied by every self-respecting professional translator and interpreter. He initiated the Vigo School of thought in translation theory with the creation of the notion of paratraducción. Since its inception in 2005, the international impact of the translation studies term paratraducción has been more than considerable, having been translated into 17 languages (Spanish, Galician, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, French, English, German, Chinese, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Romanian, Persian, and Arabic) in international scholarly publications. In 2022, the prestigious Canadian excellence journal Meta. Journal des traducteurs. Translators’ Journal published an entire issue dedicated to the notion of paratraducción, edited by José Yuste Frías.
