Joan Miquel-Vergés is a tenured professor in the Area of Translation and Interpretation at the Department of Translation and Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology and Translation at the University of Vigo. He holds a degree in Philology from the University of Barcelona (1992) and a PhD in Philology from the Rovira i Virgili University (1997). He has undertaken research stays at various European and American universities in fields related to Mathematics, Computer Science, Cognitive Sciences, and Philology.
His research focuses on Computational Linguistics and computer applications in translation, with a particular emphasis on new technologies, accessibility, and multimedia translation. Within the iLingua framework, he works on the analysis and development of artificial intelligence-based tools for translation and audiovisual content adaptation. One of his current projects explores the creation of deepfakes, a phenomenon linked to digital misinformation. Additionally, he is researching the automatic dubbing of educational videos with lip-syncing using artificial intelligence, with the aim of improving access to knowledge in minority or minoritized languages, such as Galician.
He is a member of the TALES (Translation, Accessibility, Literature, and Screen) research group, where he collaborates on projects that combine translation and accessibility with audiovisual technologies, particularly in the field of automatic dubbing and multimedia content adaptation for diverse audiences.
He is also part of the GTiCH (Group for Teaching Innovation on Children’s Literature), where he investigates the impact of new technologies on education and the dissemination of children’s literature, exploring innovative AI-based solutions for the translation and accessibility of educational materials.
His work seeks to generate synergies with other researchers and professionals interested in the intersection of language and technology, fostering innovation in translation and multilingual communication.
